Helen Gordon Center Professional Development Days Initiative
Spend time with Drs. Christine Chaillé and Will Parnell, the Helen Gordon Center staff, Remida Portland and educators from the Portland Baby School considering how we can support theory building.

On Friday morning after a welcome session, there will be an opportunity for focused tours of the Helen Gordon Center. This is a time to encounter the classrooms and community spaces as well as engage with the many narratives and documented experiences displayed around the school. Next, Christine Chaillé will keynote on supporting theory building: listening, relating, creating.

At noon, participants are invited to visit classrooms and talk with small groups of Helen Gordon Center teachers while enjoying a hearty meal prepared on site by our school’s chefs. After lunch, participants will engage in hands-on experiences and visual narratives proposed by the classroom and studio educators at Helen Gordon Center. We hope these intentional engagements open new pathways to consider the possibilities of listening, relating and creating in your own schools. At the end of the day, we will gather back together to share impressions of our experiences.

On Saturday morning, a selection of breakout sessions will invite consideration of the ways that collaboration with like-minded colleagues can inspire and inform our practice and reinforce our values. One session includes time with Remida Portland on ecological issues--learning to cultivate meaningful projects with reuse materials. Another focuses on digital mobile technology documentation. Jackie Bartlett of the Portland Baby School and Professor Will Parnell will ask participants to explore the uses of mobile technologies in everyday documentation practices and expand the value of documentation. Participants will use iPads* to document a practice play session and describe and interpret their learning. Saturday’s sessions culminate with a pledging of intentions for future work.

Notes: We will serve you lunch on Friday, and provide snacks, coffee and water throughout your experience.
*(Saturday session on digital mobile technology: Competence using a tablet or smartphone is not required, but this session is not intended to be a mobile technology tutorial session)
